minttown1Today on the way to and from therapy, I listened to the first season of Red vs Blue. There were two interesting passages to note in light of later seasons.
Episode 1x13, about Tex.
Tucker: […] Half women, half sharks that won’t even sleep with me.
[…]
Church: She’s always been a rotten bitch, it’s just now she’s a rotten bitch with cybernetic enhancements.
&
Episode 10x09, about Carolina.
Simmons: Yeah, we’ve got a trigger-happy psychopath.
Sarge: It’s like she’s some sort of half-woman, half-shark. Except the shark half has been given cybernetic powers. And the woman half is also one quarter jaguar.
Carolina is Tex's daughter. (Okay. Actually, Carolina is Allison's daughter, and Allison is the dead woman on whose memory Tex is based. Uh. We'll say "close enough" here.) You don't find that out until the end of season ten. At best, if you remember the season-one exchange, you think it's one of the show's many clever parallels/callbacks, but it means SO MUCH MORE in light of the revelation about Carolina's parentage.
Okay okay and then here's the other one.
Episode 1x17:
Tex: As far as I'm concerned, I'm square with you.
Church: I saved you from a life of imprisonment. How the hell are you square with me?
Tex: Because I didn't kill you back at Sidewinder.
Church: You know, I don't really see how not killing somebody is the same thing as doing them a favor.
kaljdklaejkljadkl I actually made whatever the human vocal equivalent of a keysmash is in the car after hearing this exchange. Which I had heard a dozen times before. But guys, guys. When Tex went to Sidewinder, when she "didn't kill" Church? She'd gone there to rescue him, Church, the Alpha. She'd gone to save him from a life of imprisonment, too, but he was too far gone, she was too late. And then a bunch of horrible crap went down and, you know, that's when the series wrapped back around to the beginning, or veeeerrrry shortly before the beginning.
But seriously, from season eight:
Tex: You've been here before. We all were. This is where they moved Alpha. After a few of us Freelancers went rogue, we compared notes and pieced together what they were doing to him. I convinced them to come back. Break him out. The project moved him here to try to protect him, so that they could keep experimenting on him. [...] It was too late. By the time I got to him, he was already long gone. I don't even think he recognized me. I failed... Only in my case, it really was my fault.

p.s. Don't forget that Tex was doomed to fail at rescuing the Alpha because she literally fails at everything.
From season six.
Washington: She's just a shadow.
Church: Don't call her that. She died in her real life, and that's all the Director ever remembered of her. So now, no matter how tough she is, no matter how hard she fights, she's always going to fail, because that's what she's based on. No matter what she's doing, or what she's trying to accomplish, just when her goal is within her reach, it gets yanked away. Every. Single. Time. Can you imagine what that's like?
p.p.s. Yes, Wash can imagine. The same is true of his goals, only instead of a profound and tragic reason, it's simply because he isn't good enough.
I can't.
I hate this show and love it in equal measure.
TEX TRIED TO SAVE CHURCH FROM A LIFE OF IMPRISONMENT FIRST, BUT HE DOESN'T REMEMBER THAT.
ALLISON'S DAUGHTER ENDED UP SO MUCH LIKE HER, OR AT LEAST THIS OTHER VERSION OF HER.
This show is physically painful. Fortunately, I have chocolate peanut butter no-bakes in the kitchen and all the time in the world to have emotional displays about Red vs Blue.
