In my life, I've known several women diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder. I've also done a lot of reading on the giant debate as to whether such a condition even exists, which seems pretty ludicrous once you've watched someone shift in front of you, but my opinion doesn't count because I don't have a doctorate. I don't even remember learning about DID as a child because it was such a huge part of my life, in a very matter-of-fact way. But whatever, I throw all this in because I want to at least acknowledge others' skepticism. And to say that I think we can all agree, wherever you fall on that question (that 99% of people have neither the professional training nor the life experience to have an opinion about, but you know what they say about opinions), it's all pretty heavy stuff.

So yeah, this question on the front page was a great big "LOL, we suck" from livejournal first thing in the morning. Hi, guys! I guess your two personalities are the one that's all concerned about social issues with charity v-gifts and then the other one that makes really weak jokes about mental health.

Thank you for saying this. My mother has DID, and I couldn't help but feeling more than a little taken aback seeing this on the LJ homepage this morning. It is a very real disorder.

I firmly believe its real. I've been close with people suffering Borderline Personality Disorder, and I've met one or two DID sufferers, as well. No one who's seen it in action could be so blasé about it.

*hugs* However, your bravery and compassion make me smile.

I'm always a little shocked at how many jokes get made about psychiatric disorders- like somehow those illnesses are OK to make fun of. I bought an eye shadow palette a couple months ago where all of the shadows had s-adjective names, like "Sassy," "Silly," etc. (which is really dumb to begin with), and one of them was called "Schitzo." I just wondered how many people had a hand in making that, and no one realized that that was insensitive?
